I grew up in Sussex, and the South Downs are etched into my consciousness. They are the horizon line of my childhood — the familiar sweep of land and sky that still feels like home.

This painting holds the essence of those summer days: chalky paths beneath my feet, grasses rising high and brushing against my hands, the steady hum of insects carried on warm air. The Downs were never still — they shimmered in the heat, colours shifting between soft greens, sunlit yellows and distant blues. The land seemed to breathe.

I remember the endlessness of it all — the wide sky, the rolling fields stretching beyond sight, and the feeling that the day would never quite fade. Standing within tall grasses, half-hidden, watching the horizon blur in the summer light — those are the moments that return to me as I paint.

This work is not just a view of the South Downs; it is a memory of them. A layering of light, movement and feeling — a place that continues to live within me.
